Biography: Top of Document
Dennis Fehler is a Landscape Architect with over
30 years of diversified professional "land and water" related experiences in
residential and commercial design, environmental design and planning, large and small
scale project management, terrain analysis, field construction, contract documentation,
Geographic Information Systems, (GIS), Satellite Image Processing, and multi-resource
analysis and management.
Consultant to: Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum, Inc.
HoK, and PageSoutherlandPage
PSP,
and Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. ESRI.
This year Mr. Fehler is offering Introductory and
Advanced Internet courses through the University of Oklahoma, OU,
(for college credit), and is offering a series of CE online courses through Baylor
University, BU, Continuing Education, for Continuing
Education Units, (CEU's).
Since 1996 Mr. Fehler has offered an Intersession
Continuing Education Course titled WebStudy. The on-line course is an introduction
to the World Wide Web and allows students to take full advantage of the Internet for
research, communication, and data sharing. The course covers basic history and set up
specifications for academic and personal Internet accounts, the efficient use of the
Internet for data search and retrieval, case studies of emerging technologies surrounding
the WWW, and development and posting of a student web page with interactive text and
graphics. Taught remotely via the Internet, students have the flexibility to work at home
using a commercial (or OU) Internet service, or at any available OU computer lab.

Mr. Fehler is a past Assistant Professor of Landscape
Architecture in the College of Design at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge where
he taught both graduate and undergraduate regional and urban planning design studies and a
special topics technology class at the graduate level. Teaching with a non-traditional
high-technology strategy he incorporated the latest geographic information system hardware
and software utilizing the Design College's state of the art equipment in image
processing, remote sensing, and terrain analysis. Mr. Fehler's unique combination of
application and methodologies is derived from his extensive professional experience with
an ultimate purpose of assisting students to apply global concepts to a local
situation. (return
to LSU above)
In May of 1987, Mr. Fehler began a career with an
emerging Software Company called ERDAS (Earth Resources Data Analysis Systems). He taught
methods and applications in both Image Processing and Geographic Information Systems.
Potential and existing ERDAS clients require instruction in using the ERDAS software and
education in Mr. Fehler's specialties which include engineering applications in
development, forestry applications, landuse assessment, and visual quality analysis using
the latest image processing and remote sensing techniques and technologies. (return to ERDAS above)
In the recent past, Mr. Fehler worked in the
Boston office of The SWA Group, Landscape Architects and Land Planners. For three years he
applied his skills in project management, construction supervision, photography, and
microcomputer applications in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and
terrain analysis. He taught and practiced internationally in GIS capabilities, resource
management, and both commercial and residential development potential analysis. He
incorporated the use of the latest technology in both raster (grid/pixel) and vector (CAD)
equipment and combined various forms of photography and videography with multi-spectral
satellite information. Clients included the Disney Corporation of California, Amerifirst
Development Corporation of Florida, Bixby Corporation of California, and Howard Hughes
Development of Nevada. These 25,000 (plus) acre projects required preparation of a
valuable GIS data base that he manipulated to produce computer generated Opportunity and
Constraints Analysis Maps used in community planning, economic assessment, and resource
management. (return to SWA above)
In 1978, Mr. Fehler accepted a Forest Landscape
Architect position with the United States Forest Service, Mark Twain National Forest, in
Missouri. For six years he designed and supervised construction of several major
recreational facilities including the Eleven Point National Scenic River. He planned and
designed the Willow Springs Regional Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) residential camp where
he developed an architectural and planting scheme that allowed camp members to construct
their living quarters and other camp facilities. His most significant accomplishment in
government service was the manual and computer inventory of 4.5 million acres of federal
and private land to determine the Existing Visual Quality (EVQ) and provided Visual
Quality Objectives that were incorporated into the National Forest planning efforts. This
three-year, eight-person intensive mapping effort provided existing and potential visual
quality information essential to the Forest Service's multi-resource management system. (return to Mark Twain above)
Mr. Fehler's teaching experience includes teaching assistantships
at both Louisiana State University and Harvard University, and international teaching and
training sessions in GIS methods and applications in the Middle and Far East. Other
professional seminars he has taught include traditional airphoto interpretation, physical
terrain analysis, and construction process in association with Earth Technology
Corporation, Earth Resources Data Analysis Systems, Inc., Louisiana State University, and
the SWA Group.
Mr. Fehler is currently authoring the natural and human
systems WebBook titled EARTHUSE.htm. EARTHUSE relates Geographic Information Systems and
Image Processing techniques and technologies with respect to contemporary design methods
and applications. EARTHUSE is organized in a "what to do" and "how to do
it" format and is easily accessed by Internet.
